Well, I've talked with my students about this a lot. You know, it's often a great topic for lessons.

--often ask me that question. And it's a difficult one to answer because I say 'no', but perhaps I am, in some ways.

Well, it's little things, like, for example, I have this necklace that was, you know, I inherited from my grandfather and handed down to my mom, and then to me. It's very, very special. It's not, you know, it's not actually very expensive or anything. Sentimental value. And sometimes I just have to-- I can't leave the house without it. I have to have it on, especially if I'm doing something important. Which is kind of superstitious, isn't it?

Oh, there you go. Yeah, stuff like that, exactly. But I think that, in the UK at least, being superstitious and believing in things like that, or like believing in star signs, it's kind of seen as a bit of rubbish, really, I think. Most people don't really--

So I'm a Taurus. But whenever people were talking about star signs, I kept hearing this thing they were saying which was, "But what's your moon rising?" And I was like, "I'm sorry, but what does that mean?" And my friend told me, apparently, our signs, like Cancer or Taurus, are how we portray ourselves to the world. But then we have an actual sign which is, you know--

Yeah. So, apparently, my moon rising is Aquarius, which makes sense because I also love-- I'm obsessed with water, like the sea, swimming, tea.

Okay, okay. That's interesting. I wonder what my moon rising is, then. I have to look it up. But I have had a look online just now and I can see that Cancer, my star sign, has the greatest compatibility with Taurus.

I can be a bit moody, yeah, I can-- I'm very easily influenced by my surroundings, so if I feel like there's an air of negativity, I might get moody. Do you know what I mean?

So funny. But, if we compare this to Korea - which is what we've been doing in each episode this time round - I don't think a lot of our students really talk about horoscope and, like, signs of the Zodiac and things like that, much. They kind of seem to be more into these tests, like the MBTI one.

I have. A friend convinced me to do it and when it comes to personality tests, I'm quite skeptical because I think you know, there are 8 billion humans, you can't really divide them neatly into, what is it, 12, 14. But saying that when you read it, it's quite scary because my one was incredibly accurate.

Yeah, I will do it, I will do it. Definitely. I love horoscopes. I love star signs. I do believe-- I am one of those people that people say, you know, "That's a load of rubbish." I really do believe in your star sign having some, like, some truth in what your personality is. So not so much the hor-- yeah, I believe each person's star sign, yeah, it's accurate to their personality.

But I don't really believe in horoscopes where they say, "Oh, tomorrow you're going to do this" or "In the next few months...", you know, I just, yeah, don't really believe in that bit.

Okay, so now would be a good time to describe, explain what we mean when we say things like 'star sign' and 'horoscope'.

 

Steph  10:22

Exactly, exactly. So we had three-word takeaway as usual. So the first one is, let's say 'star sign', which is a noun, of course, and you could say just 'sign' if you want. And it means one of the 12 signs of the Zodiac. Okay, we're going to describe what Zodiac is in a minute. But we use it like this. We could say, "What's your star sign?" And the answer might be Aquarius.

Exactly. This is-- yeah, star signs are used a lot for dating, like for, you know, seeing if someone is a good match for you.

So what's our next word?

 

Dalya  11:26

This is 'horoscope', which is a kind of funny sounding word, isn't it? So a horoscope is a prediction of what's going to happen to someone in the future based on the position of the stars and the planets when the person was born. So this is something you might read in a newspaper, and it's a short paragraph, you know, saying, "This week, you're gonna come into money" or "Next week, you're going to meet the man of your dreams", blah, blah, blah. So you could say for example, "Do you believe in horoscopes?" "I'm not sure I do." Or we could say, "What does your horoscope say?" "I haven't looked in the paper today."

*come into ~에 들어가다, ~의 상태가 되다, ~을 얻게되다.

That's it. Very nice. Of course, these days, I guess you could just Google your horoscope for the week somewhere, or maybe somebody will have apps and things showing their horoscopes. But yes, back in the day, it was the newspaper or magazine.

And back to the word Zodiac. So the Zodiac, this is a noun. It's singular, so we don't say Zodiacs. And basically, this is the imaginary area in the sky in which the Sun, the Moon, and planets appear to lie, and which has been divided into twelve equal parts, each with a special name and a symbol. The only way we really use this is saying something like, "There are twelve signs of the Zodiac."

Yeah, and this word might sound pretty unfamiliar to people, but I think quite a few people, if they saw the actual table of symbols, with the crab and the bull - the crab is Cancer, the bull is Taurus - that would-- they'd know what we were talking about.

Yeah, exactly. Exactly. So those are called signs of the Zodiac. Star signs, if you like. Alright, well, I think that's all we've got time for for today.
